At Alertify, we understand the concern from hosts, property managers and hoteliers that guests may simply just unplug the Alertify device and it will stop working. We have placed certain measures to prevent this from happening, such as equipping every device with a backup battery that lasts hours, continuing in keeping your device monitoring for violations. Additionally, when the device is unplugged, a notification will be sent letting you know that it is not connected to power.
Unfortunately, some guests may attempt to tamper with these devices, such as covering them with plastic bags, towels, or cardboard boxes. Not only does this compromise the effectiveness of the device, but it also may damage the device and lead to rule-breaking such as smoking. This guide highlights ways to see if your Alertify device has been tampered with.
Identifying Tampering Attempts
One of the key indicators of device tampering is a sudden rise in temperature. When guests cover devices in an attempt to obstruct their function, it often results in an increase in temperature within the confined space. As a host, you can easily monitor these temperature changes through the Alertify dashboard.
The Alertify dashboard provides hosts with real-time data and insights into the status of their devices. One of the crucial features is the temperature graph, which displays fluctuations in temperature over time. By regularly monitoring this graph and keeping an eye out for any notifications from the Alertify system, hosts can detect any unusual spikes in temperature that may indicate tampering attempts by guests.
Responding to Alerts
Upon detecting a sudden rise in temperature, the Alertify system triggers a notification alerting hosts to the potential rise in temperature, based on your temperature settings. Additionally, if the device detects smoke coming from the room, an immediate smoke notification is sent to the host or hotel front desk. It's essential for hosts and hotel staff to intervene promptly upon receiving these alerts. Alertify suggests intervening on the first alert to avoid lasting damage within the room.
Intervention Protocol
When a temperature or smoke notification is received, it's important for hosts to take swift action. Here's a suggested intervention protocol:
1. Verify the Alert: Before taking any action, double-check the notification and review the temperature graph to confirm the anomaly.
2. Investigate: Approach the accommodation to assess the situation. If safe to do so, inspect the device to determine the extent of tampering.
3. Address the Issue: Politely inform the guest about the detected tampering and remind them of the accommodation rules.
4. Follow-Up: Monitor the device closely after the intervention to ensure that tampering does not recur. Consider implementing additional measures, such as informing your guests of the noise, smoke and occupancy monitor and letting them know that tampering the device will not be tolerated.
